Frequently Asked Questions
A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) captures soot and particulate matter from your exhaust gases to reduce harmful emissions. Over time, the filter becomes blocked and must regenerate — either passively on long motorway runs or actively triggered by the engine management system. A blocked DPF will cause a warning light and, if left unaddressed, can lead to significant engine damage and an expensive replacement.
DPF blockages are most commonly caused by frequent short journeys that prevent the filter from reaching the temperature needed for passive regeneration. Low-quality fuel, a faulty EGR valve, oil contamination or a failing fuel injector can also contribute to premature DPF failure.
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve recirculates a portion of exhaust gases back into the engine intake to reduce NOx emissions. EGR valves can stick open or closed due to carbon build-up, causing rough idling, poor performance and increased fuel consumption.
AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid used in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce NOx emissions in diesel vehicles fitted with this technology. If AdBlue runs out completely, many vehicles will refuse to restart as a regulatory requirement. Warning lights will appear before it runs out to give you time to top up.
